Where is the Sistine Chapel?

The chapel was built between 1473 and 1481 for Pope Sixtus IV, who gave it its name. Its walls were decorated by leading Renaissance painters including Botticelli, Perugino and Ghirlandaio. Michelangelo painted the famous ceiling between 1508 and 1512, covering it with scenes from the Book of Genesis, including the iconic Creation of Adam. He returned decades later to paint The Last Judgment on the altar wall, completed in 1541. The chapel is also where cardinals gather in secret conclave to elect a new pope.
