The Full Story
Lascaux cave was discovered in September 1940 by four teenagers, led by 18-year-old Marcel Ravidat. Its walls hold around 600 paintings and about 1,500 engravings, mostly of horses, deer, aurochs and bison, created roughly 17,000 years ago. The cave opened to the public in 1948, but the breath of large crowds encouraged harmful growths, so it was closed in 1963. Visitors now see detailed replicas: Lascaux II opened in 1983 and the larger Lascaux IV in 2016. The cave is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site listed in 1979.
