Where is the Mona Lisa kept?

Leonardo da Vinci brought the painting to France when he moved there in 1516, and it entered the French royal collection after his death. It has been displayed at the Louvre since shortly after the French Revolution, apart from brief spells such as when Napoleon kept it in his bedroom. The Louvre is the most visited museum in the world, welcoming around 8.7 million visitors in 2024, and most of them come to see this one painting. The Mona Lisa is surprisingly small, at just 77 by 53 centimetres, and is painted on a poplar wood panel. In 2025 the museum announced plans for a dedicated new room for the painting as part of a major renovation.
