Kremlin means fortress, and many old Russian cities have one, but the Moscow Kremlin is by far the most famous. Its red-brick walls, built between 1485 and 1495 with the help of Italian architects, stretch about 2.2 kilometres and include 20 towers. Inside are palaces, cathedrals and the official residence of the President of Russia. Along its eastern wall lies Red Square, home to Lenin’s Mausoleum and the colourful onion domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, built between 1555 and 1561. The Kremlin and Red Square were listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
