The Golden Gate strait is the 1.6-kilometre-wide entrance to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. Chief engineer Joseph Strauss led the project, and construction ran from January 1933 until the bridge opened on 27 May 1937. At 1,280 metres, its main span was the longest suspension span in the world until 1964. Its towers rise 227 metres above the water, and the bridge carries around 112,000 vehicles a day. Its famous colour, International Orange, was chosen to blend with the landscape and stand out in the fog.
