The Full Story

The best-known Dead Sea Scrolls are housed at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, where many are exhibited in the Shrine of the Book. The scrolls were discovered between 1947 and 1956 in caves near Qumran, by the Dead Sea. They include some of the oldest surviving biblical manuscripts, along with community texts and other ancient writings. Because the materials are extremely fragile, the scrolls are shown only sparingly under carefully controlled conditions.
