Where is Patagonia?

Patagonia covers roughly 1 million square kilometres at the southern tip of South America, stretching south from around the Colorado River in Argentina and the region of Puerto Montt in Chile. The Andes run along its western side, with fjords, glaciers and rainforest in Chile, while the Argentine side is mostly dry, windswept steppe. The Southern Patagonian Ice Field is the largest body of ice in the Southern Hemisphere outside Antarctica. Famous sights include Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina. The name dates to Ferdinand Magellan’s voyage in 1520, when his crew called the local people “Patagón”, suggesting giants.
