While the Nile and the Amazon are often debated as the longest river, the Amazon is undisputed as the largest by volume of water. It discharges an astonishing average of around 209,000 cubic metres of water per second into the Atlantic Ocean — more than the next several largest rivers combined, and roughly one-fifth of all river water entering the oceans. Its vast basin drains much of northern South America and feeds the world largest rainforest. In places the river is so wide you cannot see the far bank.
