Where is Niagara Falls?

The Niagara River flows north from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, dropping over a limestone cliff called the Niagara Escarpment. Niagara Falls is actually three waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls, mostly in Canada, and the smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls in the US. The Horseshoe Falls drops about 57 metres, and during peak tourist hours at least 2,800 cubic metres of water per second must flow over the falls by treaty. The falls formed around 12,000 years ago as glaciers retreated at the end of the last ice age and have since eroded about 11 km upstream. Much of the river water is diverted to generate hydroelectric power for both countries.
