Where is Mount Fuji?

At 3,776 metres, Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. It is an active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707, during the Hoei eruption, which spread ash as far as Edo, now Tokyo. Its nearly symmetrical cone has inspired artists for centuries, including Hokusai famous woodblock series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. The mountain is sacred in Shinto and Buddhist traditions, and it was named a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site in 2013. Every summer, during the official climbing season from July to early September, hundreds of thousands of people hike to the summit.
