Monaco lies on the Mediterranean coast between Nice and the Italian border, about 15 km from Italy. With an area of only about 2 square kilometres, it is the second-smallest country in the world after Vatican City. Around 38,000 people live there, making it the most densely populated country on Earth. The Grimaldi family has ruled Monaco since 1297, when François Grimaldi is said to have captured its fortress disguised as a monk. It is famous for the Monte Carlo Casino, opened in the 1860s, and the Monaco Grand Prix, first held in 1929.
