Where is Neuschwanstein Castle?

King Ludwig II of Bavaria began building the fairy-tale castle in 1869 as a romantic retreat inspired by medieval legends and the operas of Richard Wagner. Despite its medieval look, it had modern features for its time, including central heating, running water and flushing toilets. Ludwig lived there for only about 172 days before he was declared unfit to rule and died mysteriously in 1886, and the castle was opened to the public just weeks later. Today it welcomes around 1.4 million visitors a year. Its turrets are widely said to have inspired Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland.
