The range crosses France, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and Slovenia. It formed over tens of millions of years as the African plate pushed northward into Europe, crumpling and lifting the rock. The highest peak is Mont Blanc on the French–Italian border at roughly 4,806 metres, a height that shifts slightly with its ice cap. Dozens of Alpine peaks rise above 4,000 metres, including the pyramid-shaped Matterhorn at 4,478 metres. The Alps also feed great rivers including the Rhine, Rhône and Po, and have hosted the Winter Olympics many times.
