Mont Blanc rises to around 4,806 metres, though its exact height changes slightly year to year because of its thick ice cap. The French town of Chamonix and the Italian town of Courmayeur sit at its base. It was first climbed on 8 August 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard, an event often seen as the birth of modern mountaineering. The 11.6-kilometre Mont Blanc Tunnel, opened in 1965, runs beneath it to connect France and Italy. Its name means 'White Mountain' in French.
