Whose play is Hamlet?

Hamlet was written by William Shakespeare, probably around 1599 to 1601. It tells the story of Prince Hamlet of Denmark, who seeks revenge after the ghost of his father reveals that he was murdered by Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, who has taken the throne and married Hamlet’s mother. At around 4,000 lines, it is Shakespeare’s longest play, and a full performance can last around four hours. It contains some of the most quoted lines in English, including To be, or not to be, that is the question. Shakespeare based it partly on an older Scandinavian legend of a prince called Amleth.
