The Full Story
Shelley began the story in the summer of 1816 at the Villa Diodati near Lake Geneva, during a ghost-story contest with Lord Byron, her future husband Percy Shelley and John Polidori. That summer was cold and stormy because of the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, and it became known as the Year Without a Summer. Mary was just 18 when she started the book and 20 when it was published. Its full title is Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Many people forget that Frankenstein is the name of the scientist, Victor, not of the creature he brings to life.
