Whose expedition first sailed around the world?

The first circumnavigation of the globe was achieved by an expedition that set out in 1519 under the command of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, sailing for the Spanish crown. The fleet crossed the Atlantic, found the passage at the southern tip of South America now called the Strait of Magellan, and became the first Europeans to cross the Pacific. Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in 1521 and never completed the journey. Command eventually passed to Juan Sebastián Elcano, who brought the sole surviving ship, the Victoria, back to Spain in 1522 — proving the world could be sailed around and confirming its vast size.
