Whose voyage first circumnavigated the globe?

The first voyage to circumnavigate the globe was led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, sailing under the Spanish flag from 1519. Magellan himself did not survive the journey — he was killed in a battle in the Philippines in 1521 — but one of his ships, the Victoria, completed the round-the-world route under the command of Juan Sebastian Elcano, returning to Spain in 1522. Of the roughly 270 men and five ships that set out, only about 18 men and one ship made it home. The expedition proved conclusively that the Earth could be sailed around and gave Europeans their first true sense of the planets size.
