Whose ship first circumnavigated the globe?

The first voyage around the world was accomplished by an expedition that set out from Spain in 1519 under the command of the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, sailing for the Spanish crown. The fleet crossed the Atlantic, found a passage around the southern tip of South America now called the Strait of Magellan, and became the first Europeans to cross the vast Pacific Ocean. Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in 1521 and never completed the journey. The expedition continued under Juan Sebastian Elcano, and in 1522 the ship Victoria returned to Spain, having sailed all the way around the world. Of the five ships and about 270 men who began the voyage, only one ship and 18 exhausted survivors made it back, but they had proven the Earth could be circled by sea.
