Whose map first named America?

In 1507 Martin Waldseemuller and his colleagues produced a large world map that was the first known document to use the name America for the newly encountered lands across the Atlantic. The name honoured the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci, who argued that the lands were a new continent rather than part of Asia. The map applied the name to what is now South America. Only a single copy of this famous map is known to survive, and it is held by the Library of Congress in the United States. The name gradually came to cover both American continents.
