Whose Building Is the Guggenheim Museum?

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue in New York City was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most influential architects in history. Commissioned by art collector Solomon R. Guggenheim and museum director Hilla Rebay in 1943, the building took 16 years from concept to completion, opening on October 21, 1959 — six months after Wright's death at age 91. Its iconic spiraling ramp design allows visitors to view artwork continuously while ascending or descending, eliminating traditional gallery rooms. The building was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 as part of a collection of Wright's works. The Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain, designed by Frank Gehry (opened 1997), is another famous branch.
