Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor), the 30-metre Art Deco statue atop Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, was designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built under the supervision of Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida crafted the face. Construction lasted from 1922 to 1931, with the statue inaugurated on 12 October 1931. Weighing about 635 tonnes, it is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and has become an iconic symbol of both Rio and Brazil.
