Which is the smallest dog breed?

The Chihuahua is the smallest recognised dog breed, with most adults weighing between about 1.5 and 3 kilograms. The breed is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where it became known in the 19th century, and it may descend from an ancient companion dog called the Techichi, kept by the Toltecs. In 2023 Guinness World Records named a Chihuahua called Pearl from Florida the shortest living dog, standing just 9.14 centimetres tall. Despite their size, Chihuahuas are known for bold, protective personalities. They are also among the longest-lived dog breeds, often reaching 14 to 16 years.
