Which animal migrates the farthest?

The Arctic tern holds the record for the longest annual migration of any animal, flying from its Arctic breeding grounds to Antarctica and back each year. Tracking studies have shown some birds cover up to 90,000 kilometres annually because they follow winding, zig-zag routes to take advantage of prevailing winds. Over a lifespan of about 30 years, an Arctic tern may fly the equivalent of three round trips to the Moon. Because it chases summer at both ends of the Earth, it experiences more daylight than any other creature. Among marine animals, humpback whales and leatherback turtles also undertake enormous migrations.
