Reykjavík lies on Iceland's southwest coast, just south of the Arctic Circle. According to tradition, it was settled around 874 AD by the Norse chieftain Ingólfur Arnarson. Its name means 'smoky bay', probably from steam rising from nearby hot springs. Today most homes in the city are heated with geothermal energy. Nuuk in Greenland lies slightly farther north, but Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark rather than an independent country.
