The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest of Earth’s five oceans, covering about 165 million square kilometers — greater than the total land area of the entire planet. It stretches from the Arctic in the north to the Southern Ocean, and from Asia and Australia in the west to the Americas in the east, spanning roughly a third of Earth’s surface. It also contains the deepest known point, the Challenger Deep. The name “Pacific,” meaning peaceful, was given by explorer Ferdinand Magellan, though the ocean is home to powerful storms and the seismically active Ring of Fire around its edges.
