The Arabian Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the world, covering roughly 3.2 million square kilometres of south-west Asia. It is bordered by the Red Sea to the west, the Arabian Sea to the south and the Persian Gulf to the east. Saudi Arabia occupies most of it, alongside Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait. Much of the peninsula is desert, including the Rub’ al Khali, or Empty Quarter, the largest continuous sand desert on Earth. Beneath it lie some of the largest oil reserves ever discovered.
