Kazakhstan stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to the Altai Mountains in the east and is the ninth-largest country overall. It borders Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Although it has a coastline on the Caspian Sea, the Caspian is itself landlocked, so Kazakhstan has no direct access to the open ocean. The Baikonur Cosmodrome, the world's first and largest spaceport, is in southern Kazakhstan. The second-largest landlocked country is Mongolia, at about 1.56 million square kilometres.
