Zanzibar lies about 25 to 50 km off the East African mainland and consists of the main islands of Unguja and Pemba plus many smaller islets. It united with Tanganyika in 1964 to form Tanzania but keeps its own president and government for local affairs. For centuries it was a major trading hub linking Africa, Arabia and India, and it was once the world’s leading producer of cloves, earning the nickname the Spice Islands. Its historic Stone Town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Queen singer Freddie Mercury was born there in 1946.
