Madagascar is separated from Mozambique on the African mainland by the Mozambique Channel. At about 587,000 square kilometres, it is the fourth-largest island in the world. It split from Africa more than 150 million years ago and later from India around 88 million years ago, and this long isolation allowed unique wildlife to evolve. Roughly 90 per cent of its plants and animals are found nowhere else, including all of the world’s wild lemurs. The capital is Antananarivo, and the country has a population of about 30 million.
