Bali sits just south of the equator in the Indian Ocean and is home to about 4.3 million people. Unlike most of Muslim-majority Indonesia, around 87 percent of Balinese follow Hinduism, and the island is dotted with thousands of temples such as Tanah Lot and Uluwatu. Its volcanic spine is topped by Mount Agung at 3,031 metres, which erupted in 1963 and again in 2017. The island’s rice terraces are watered by subak, a cooperative irrigation system dating back over a thousand years and listed by UNESCO in 2012. Bali welcomed more than 5 million foreign visitors in 2023, making it one of the world’s most popular island destinations.
