Where is Transylvania?

Transylvania, whose name means 'beyond the forest' in Latin, was for centuries part of the Kingdom of Hungary and later the Habsburg Empire. It became part of Romania in 1918 after World War I, confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon in 1920. The region is known for medieval Saxon towns such as Sibiu, Brașov and Sighișoara, whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bran Castle is marketed as 'Dracula's Castle', although Bram Stoker never visited Romania. Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler, who partly inspired the Dracula legend, was born in Sighișoara around 1431.
