Where is the Tropic of Cancer?

The Tropic of Cancer lies at roughly 23°26′ north and is the northernmost line where the Sun can appear directly overhead at noon, which happens at the June solstice. It crosses parts of North America, Africa and Asia, passing through countries including Mexico, the Bahamas, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China and Taiwan. Its twin in the south, the Tropic of Capricorn, marks the same point for the December solstice. The name comes from the fact that about 2,000 years ago the Sun was in the constellation Cancer at the June solstice; because of the slow wobble of Earth’s axis it now appears in Taurus. Like the Arctic Circle, the line is slowly shifting, currently moving south by about 15 metres a year.
