Greenland, in the North Atlantic between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, is the largest island on Earth at about 2.16 million square kilometers — roughly three times the size of Texas. Australia is larger overall, but geographers classify it as a continent rather than an island. Despite its vast size, Greenland has a tiny population of around 56,000 people, because roughly 80% of its surface is buried under a permanent ice sheet up to 3 kilometers thick.
