Greenland is the world’s largest island at about 2.16 million square kilometres, lying between Canada and Iceland. Geographically it belongs to North America, but politically it is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with home rule since 1979 and wider self-rule since 2009. Around 80 per cent of it is covered by an ice sheet that is up to about 3 km thick. Only around 56,000 people live there, mostly along the south-west coast, and the capital is Nuuk. If its ice sheet melted completely, global sea levels would rise by roughly 7 metres.
