Where is Siberia?

Siberia covers about 13 million square kilometres, around three-quarters of Russia’s territory, yet holds only about a quarter of its population. It extends from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Pacific coast in the east, and from the Arctic Ocean south to Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China. The region contains Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest lake at about 1,642 metres, which holds around a fifth of the world’s unfrozen fresh surface water. Siberian villages such as Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk have recorded temperatures below −67 °C, the coldest ever measured in the Northern Hemisphere. The Trans-Siberian Railway crosses it on a route of about 9,300 km from Moscow to Vladivostok.
