Location scouts for director Peter Jackson spotted the rolling green hills of the Alexander family’s sheep farm near Matamata while flying over the Waikato in 1998. They built the Shire there for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but that set was mostly temporary and partly dismantled after filming. When Jackson returned for The Hobbit films, the set was rebuilt with permanent materials. It now includes 44 hobbit holes, Bag End, a mill and the Green Dragon Inn, where visitors can have a drink. Hobbiton has become one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist attractions.
