The first Academy Awards were presented at a private dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on 16 May 1929, honouring films from 1927 and 1928. The silent war film Wings won the top prize, then called Outstanding Picture. The ceremony was first broadcast on radio in 1930 and first shown on television in 1953.
