Buckingham Palace stands in central London between St James’s Park and Green Park, facing down The Mall towards Trafalgar Square. It began as Buckingham House, a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703, and King George III bought it in 1761. Architect John Nash later enlarged it into a palace, and Queen Victoria became the first monarch to live there when she moved in in 1837. The palace has 775 rooms, including 19 state rooms and 78 bathrooms. It is the administrative headquarters of the monarchy and the setting for the famous Changing of the Guard.
