Designed by architects David Marks and Julia Barfield as a Millennium landmark, the London Eye stands about 135 metres tall on the South Bank of the River Thames. It was lifted into position in 1999 and officially opened by Prime Minister Tony Blair on New Year's Eve 1999. Technical problems delayed public rides until March 2000. It has 32 capsules, one for each London borough, each holding up to 25 people. One full rotation takes about 30 minutes.
