When was the Statue of Liberty built?

The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States, celebrating the alliance of the two nations during the American Revolution. French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi designed the figure, while engineer Gustave Eiffel created its internal iron framework. It was completed in Paris, taken apart and shipped across the Atlantic in 350 pieces packed into 214 crates. Americans raised money for the granite pedestal, helped by a newspaper campaign led by Joseph Pulitzer. Standing about 93 metres from the ground to the torch tip, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
