When was the first Wimbledon tournament held?

The 1877 tournament featured only a men's singles event, with 22 players competing. Spencer Gore won the final in front of about 200 spectators, who each paid a shilling to watch. The tournament was partly organised to raise money to repair the club's pony roller, used to maintain the croquet lawns. Women's singles was added in 1884, and Maud Watson became the first women's champion. Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and the only Grand Slam still played on grass.
