Inspired by the ancient Greek games, French educator Pierre de Coubertin organised the first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens from 6 to 15 April 1896. Around 241 athletes from 14 nations competed in 43 events across nine sports. The ancient Olympics had been held at Olympia from at least 776 BC until they were abolished around AD 393. The modern Games have since grown to include over 10,000 athletes from more than 200 nations.
