When was the first organised indoor ice hockey game played?

The game was organised by James Creighton, a young engineer from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and played between two teams of nine players. Instead of a ball, which could bounce into the spectators, they used a flat circular piece of wood, an early version of the puck. Stick-and-ball games on ice had been played informally in Britain and Canada for many years before. In 1877 students at McGill University drew up some of the first formal rules. Ice hockey became an official Olympic sport in 1920, and the National Hockey League was founded in 1917.
