When was basketball invented?

Naismith was asked to create an indoor game to keep students at the YMCA training school active during the cold New England winter. He wrote 13 original rules and nailed two peach baskets to the balcony of the gym, about 3.05 metres off the floor. The first game, played with a soccer ball, ended 1–0. Players originally had to climb a ladder to retrieve the ball after each basket, until open-bottomed nets replaced the baskets. Basketball became an Olympic sport at the 1936 Berlin Games, where Naismith himself attended.
