On 28 March 1910 French engineer Henri Fabre piloted the Hydravion, the first powered aircraft to take off from water, on the Étang de Berre near Marseille. The float-equipped monoplane flew about 800 metres on its first attempt. Seaplanes soon proved crucial for maritime patrol and mail delivery. Glenn Curtiss in the US independently developed flying boats, and by World War I seaplanes were widely used for reconnaissance. The technology later enabled transatlantic air travel before long runways became common.
