The Full Story
Concorde was developed jointly by Britain and France under a treaty signed in 1962. It could cruise at about Mach 2.04, over twice the speed of sound, crossing the Atlantic from London to New York in about three and a half hours. Commercial services with British Airways and Air France began on 21 January 1976. Only 20 Concordes were built, including prototypes and development aircraft. After a fatal crash near Paris in July 2000 and falling demand, Concorde made its final commercial flights in October 2003.
