The Full Story
Earhart was already famous as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, in 1932. In 1937, she and Noonan set out to circle the globe near the equator in a Lockheed Electra 10E. After covering about 35,000 km, they took off from Lae, New Guinea, heading for tiny Howland Island. Their last radio messages reported they were running low on fuel and could not see the island. Despite a huge US search, neither the aviators nor the plane was ever found, and she was declared legally dead in 1939.
