The Full Story
Napoleon Bonaparte rose from army officer to ruler of France after seizing power in a coup in 1799. The French Senate proclaimed him emperor in May 1804, and a vote of the people approved the change. At his coronation in Notre-Dame Cathedral on 2 December 1804, Pope Pius VII attended, but Napoleon took the crown and placed it on his own head. He then crowned his wife, Joséphine, as empress. The painter Jacques-Louis David recorded the scene in an enormous canvas nearly 10 metres wide, now in the Louvre.
