When was D-Day?

D-Day was the opening of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied western Europe during World War II. On 6 June 1944 about 156,000 American, British, Canadian and other Allied troops landed on five beaches in Normandy, code-named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Around 7,000 ships and landing craft and more than 11,000 aircraft supported the assault, making it the largest seaborne invasion in history. The attack had been delayed by a day because of bad weather. Paris was liberated on 25 August 1944, and Germany surrendered less than a year after the landings, in May 1945.
